FAQs

What shoes/dress should I wear?

Wear comfortable flat shoes as you will be standing for a minimum of an hour at a time. Clothing should be suitable to the weather, realizing that you may generate a breeze with the segway.

What if it rains?

We want everyone to have fun, but if the weather is not cooperating we do have a couple of options. If it is a light drizzle, we will generally continue with the safari and issue riders with a poncho to wear. If heavy thunderstorms are forecasted we will contact you ahead of time to delay, reschedule or even cancel the safari depending on your schedule.

Are there restrictions on where Segways are permitted?

Restrictions on Segway use is controlled by City Codes and State Legislation. In the majority of cases, States limit the minimum age of riders, require riders to ride on the sidewalks, classify Segways as pedestrian vehicles and limit the maximum speed for use on the sidewalks to 10mph. In DC the National Parks Service also restricts segway usage on National Park property. As such no segways are allowed on the National Mall or the monuments.

What other considerations are there for riders?

Weight: Segway recommends the maximum weight of riders to 260lbs, as this will ensure the maximum battery usage. Some folks maybe a little over this weight and this will not generally affect the performance of the segway

Height: The handlebars are adjustable

Age: There is a minimum age of 16 in DC and 14 in MD, PA. There is no maximum age but riders need to keep in mind that they will be standing the entire time they are on the Safari.

General health: Like all outdoor activities, participants need to be aware of their own limitations and weather conditions such as extreme heat.  Please also ensure that you are hydrated, have eaten and taken any necessary medicines prior to your safari. Let your guide know if you have any medical conditions that may impair your driving of the segway.

What is an authorized tour operator?

An authorized tour operator is a Segway Dealer. Segway Inc. established a tour operator network in 2006 to encourage dealers to supplement their segway sales with tours. Many independent operators such as ourselves had already been in business since 2003 and provided advice to Segway Inc. for the tour program including limiting the number of members in a tour group to a manageable level, restricting the speed to local ordinance rules and requiring all guides to wear helmets. Not all authorized tour operators follow these rules.

What is the top speed?

The top speed for a commercially available Segway is 12.5mph. However most jurisdictions including DC limit the sidewalk speed to 10mph

What is the price of a Segway?

The current MSRP is $5200 for the i2 and $5700 for the x2 (off road version)

What is the difference between the generation 1  model and the generation 2 model?

The original Generation 1 model of the Segway was launched commercially in 2002. This unit utilizes a steering grip on the left hand side of the handle bar and has a magnetic key system for start up. The Generation 2 model was introduced in 2006, this model does not use either the key system or the steering toggle, rather the entire handle bar tilts to facilitate steering. A remote control device replaces the key system.
